XPlorer Base

About the XPlorer Project

Given the emergence of technology, the global pandemic, and students’ unique learning needs stemming from the current 12-Year Basic Education curriculum revision (new curriculum), the Ministry of Education’s Department of Information and Technology Education in Taiwan has initiated a pilot interdisciplinary, multi-year project spanning from 2022-2025 entitled “The XPlorer Project: A University Competency-Based Education Initiative in the Humanities and Social Sciences for the New Normal Society.”

Launched in 2021, the XPlorer Project Office has committed to creating a supporting environment and ecosystem that boosts the capacity of faculty, students and administrative staff to develop meaningful, interdisciplinary communication as society adjusts to a “new normal” in the midst of a global pandemic.

The project begins with enhancing university and college-level learning infrastructure, including curriculum maps and structures, system execution capacity, innovation diffusion strategies, and students’ guidance and support systems.

The project also emphasizes the development of students’ core competency in the humanities and social sciences and integrates technology to strengthen integrative, inquiry-based, and meaningful communication.

XPlorer Strategies

The XPlorer Project catalyzes change through the institution and college-level strategies.

The “Institution-level” strategy aims to elevate the importance of the humanities and social sciences across all disciplines, particularly in cultivating successful scholars in science and technology. The executive college would work with faculty members and students to construct and reshape its curriculum map, update its course structure, content, instructional materials and methods, assessment methods, and support systems to enhance students’ self-directed learning. The ultimate goal is to diminish learning boundaries by promoting interdisciplinary collaboration between the humanities, science and technology.

The “College-level” strategy fine-tunes the continuity of the college curriculum map with the K-12 curriculum reform. It also strengthens guidance to new students about adapting to university life by fostering their self-directed learning skills.

It is expected that successful XPlorer models will emerge from ongoing operations and pilot experiments. Later the XPlorer Project Office will work through networks or associations, combined with the Ministry of Education “Higher Education SPROUT Project” to expand its impact. Individual universities may continue the activities even after the XPlorer Project is completed in 2025.

By the end of the project, we intend to achieve the following goals,

  1. Accelerate teaching and learning innovation in the context of a new normal and new curriculum; and
  2. Establish professional faculty communities with the aim of conducting practical research to improve instruction and pedagogy for inter-university collaboration and
  3. Build an interdisciplinary platform to connect young scholars.
